Ilisaqsivik Society is a non-profit, community-initiated, community-based Inuit organization in Clyde River, Nunavut. It is founded, led, and staffed by Inuit community residents. They own and operate the Ilisaqsivik Community Wellness Centre, which is dedicated to promoting community wellness, and providing space, resources, and programming that enables community members to heal and develop their strengths. It coordinates community resources that encourage and support community development and wellness in a way that maintains respect for traditional Inuit teachings and learning and is accountable to the community.
Offered are community-based and culturally-based programs that support the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs of all community members. They actively promote Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (Inuit Knowledge) and Inuuqatigiittiarniq (“the healthy inter-connection of mind, body, spirit, and the environment”) as a path to healing. Their mission is achieved by promoting, providing and/or demonstrating:
– access to educational, health, nutritional, cultural, and counselling programs;
– Elders’ participation and leadership in all programs;
– healthy lifestyle choices, positive attitudes, creativity, and resourcefulness;
– a safe, healthy and accepting place for Clyde River residents to meet;
– Inuit culture, values, livelihoods, knowledge, language, and traditions in all programs.
Community programs include, but are not limited to: Library, Computer and Internet Access, Provider and Site, Media Centre, Breakfast Program, Men’s and Women’s Healing Groups, Counselling services, Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Team, Inuit Societal Values Program, Diabetes Education and Prevention, Youth Drop-In, Land-Based Healing and Cultural Retreats, professional and personal development workshops, Professional Youth Trainee Program, Children’s Programs and Services.
